Alexandria, the trading jewel of Egypt

The Eastern Mediterranean Sea was maybe the most important area in the ancient world. It was a hot spot for trade, seafaring, culture, religion, but also for war and conquest and domination. Many ancient civilizations existed in that area, civilizations like the Greeks, Macedonians, Minoans, Hittites, Phoenicians, Persians, Egyptians etc. Egypt was a rich and powerful country in ancient times, full of grandiose buildings. In 331 BC they were liberated from Persian hands, but taken by Macedonian ones. A city was built by them and named after Alexander the Great.

That city quickly became the wealthiest city in that part of the world. Even today it has kept it’s name and some of it’s old buildings. It has buildings from the period of the medieval period as well. Today a modern replica of the ancient library is built and it is a place worth visiting.
